TERRY SWALVE
Cedar Rapids
Terry Gene Swalve, 77, passed away Jan. 31, 2017, at the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha. Family and friends will gather from 9 to 11 a.m., with a memorial service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids.
Terry was the son of Eugene and Cecile Swalve. He was born Sept. 1, 1939, in George, Iowa. He grew up in George and graduated from George High School in 1957. He earned a junior accounting degree from Mankato Commercial College and went on to attend Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., where he earned his bachelor's degree in accounting and economics.
Terry worked for J.C. Penney and Tempo, and then settled into selling men's clothing at Rehans's and eventually Norman's Men's Wear. Terry then operated his used book store, S&S Books, for many years until his stroke in 2015.
Terry's favorite pastime was supporting the Augustana sports teams; he was an avid alumnus/fan. He rarely missed a basketball or volleyball game.
The pride of Terry's life were his children and grandchildren, and spending time with them was his greatest joy. He especially enjoyed the years of driving his granddaughter, Alexis, to school.
Grateful for sharing in his life are his three children, Laura (Tim) Sagers, Lance Swalve and Kari Swalve; and grandchildren, Alexis Swalve, Ben Sagers, Siarra (Calan) Hollingsworth, Sileah (Evan) Brock and Seth Swalve. Terry also is survived by his sister, Charlene (Jim) DeGooyer; niece, Jodi DeGooyer; and nephews, Todd DeGooyer and Mark Swalve. Terry also had a very special friend, Pat Kadoun.
Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Cecil, and his brother, Gary.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy or the Family Caregivers Center at Mercy.
The family would like to extend a very special thank- you to the Hiawatha Care Center staff and Dr. MaryAnn Nelson for their love and kindness in caring for Terry the past two years. His life was enhanced by the care he received. The family would also like to thank Hospice of Mercy.
Please share your support and memories with Terry's family on his tribute wall at www.stewartbaxter.com under obituaries.
