Terry Lee Konicek, 59, died Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a long, hard and courageous battle with FXTAS and cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Hrabak Funeral Home in Belle Plaine with Penny Ackerman officiating. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Vining. A luncheon will follow at the Newhall American Legion. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Terry was born Nov. 30, 1955, in Vinton, Iowa, to Leo and Dorothy Ratzlaff Konicek. Following high school, he was united in marriage to Lucinda Anne "Cindi" Perin on Aug. 22, 1981, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids.
Terry is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Cindy of Newhall; son, Cameron of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Danielle (Scott) McGrath of Cedar Rapids and Courtney (Jason) Mehring of Newhall; brothers, Gary Konicek of Shellsburg and Larry (Leslie) Konicek of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Joyce Konicek (Keith Simmons) of Cedar Rapids, Tracy Mayland of Cedar Rapids and Vicki (Chuck) Every of Cedar Rapids; and one grandson, Jackson McGrath, whom papa loved dearly. Theirs was a unique and special bond.
Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Mary (Lyle) Wilharm of Newton; and sister-in-law, Jennifer (Scott) Anderson of Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ricky; nephew, Jeff; and father-in-law, Ron Perin.
Terry worked hard as a proud member of Iron Workers Local 89 of Cedar Rapids, most recently with Blanik. He loved working with nature, planting trees, yard work and was an avid gardener. He also loved boating, fishing and spoiling his children, grandson and his four-legged companion, Pasha.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
