Terry was born May 14, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Henry and Eunice (Hite) Edler. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1966. Terry joined the United States Army, serving honorably for 22 years. While serving, he spent two years in Vietnam. On June 25, 1966, Terry married Marjorie Root at Bethany Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids.
