Terrence “Terry” Raymond Smith, 84, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2025, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Terry was born on December 26, 1940, the son of Walter and Marguerite (Ollinger) Smith. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1958 and proudly served in the United States Army for four years. After his service, he worked as an X-ray technician in Fort Madison, Iowa, where he met the love of his life, Marilyn. They were united in marriage on June 19, 1965, in Fort Madison.
Terry’s “first love” of flying led him to a career in aviation. He began with Remmers Tomkins Flight Service, flying explosives out of Burlington, Iowa. He later became a corporate pilot for Chittenden & Eastman, flying across the “Breadbasket” of America. In 1988, he moved his family to Cedar Rapids to fly for Life Investors Insurance Company of America (now Transamerica), where he served faithfully for 17 years until his retirement. He also earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University, a testament to his dedication and love of learning.
Terry’s faith in the Lord was core to who he was, and he built his family upon that foundation. He was a devoted and active member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church. He was a man of quiet strength, deep integrity, and unwavering devotion to his family. Terry enjoyed flying, spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and sharing stories of his adventures in the sky. His gentle spirit, warm smile, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Terry is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Marilyn; and their three daughters: Kathy (George) Woodward of Marion, Karen (Jeff) Brunscheen of Cedar Rapids, and Ann (Mike) Day of Lisbon. He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren: Brent (Sydney), Bryan (Kenisha), Cory (Kali), Kelsie (Jacob), Noah, Zachary (Ana), Daniel (Allie), Jordyn (Tysen), Emily (Garrett), Hannah, Josiah, Caleb, Daniel, Isaac, and Grace. He was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, all of his siblings, and two of his great-granddaughters.
Visitation will be held at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW on Thursday, November 13, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ludmila Catholic Church on Friday, November 14, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery.
All are welcome to a luncheon at the church following the burial.
Memorials may be directed to St Vincent DePaul or St Ludmilla Church in Terry’s honor.
