Terence Joseph Devereux, 79, of Walker, Iowa, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022, after a brief diagnosis of lung cancer. A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2022, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with a vigil beginning at 6:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker, with a visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Walker.
Terry was a devoted husband and father. For those who knew him, he was loved for his quick wit and sense of humor, and his ability to captivate an audience for a story, joke, or sharing his wealth of knowledge. Terry loved the outdoors, winter recreation, farming, gardening, and his family.
Terry was born Aug. 2, 1943, to Paul Devereux and Bernice (O’Brien) Devereux. Raised in a farming community, after graduating from Dougherty High School in 1961, he joined the United States Navy serving from 1963-1967. Terry loved adventure and through this passion would go on to meet and marry his wife, Linda “Sue” F. Smith in April 1967.
Terry was a Union Sheet Metal Worker Local 263 beginning in 1968 at Quaker Oats and was also a farmer, well-known for offering help to whomever needed it. He retired from sheet metal at Climate Engineers in June 2005 and continued farming for the rest of his life. Terry was Parish Councilmember at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Linda “Sue” F. (Smith) Devereux; daughters, Angie (Tim) Reedy of Mackinaw, Ill., and Kelly (Tanner) Sprague of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sons, Stephen (Jenn) Devereux of Cedar Rapids, Robert (Georgia) Devereux of Marion, Iowa, and Gregory Devereux of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Austin (Anna) Reedy, Justin Reedy, Adam Devereux, Arianna Devereux, Allison Devereux, Megan Devereux, Bridget Percy Devereux, Brooke Devereux, Jacob Devereux, Isabella Devereux, Sophie (Candid) Lowe and Colton Lowe; great-grandchildren, Alec Brockman, Bailey and Mila Sprague; brothers, Alexander (Shirley), Patrick (Jean) and Bernard (Linda); and sister, Maurita (Doug) Penn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William, John and Donovan; sister, Kathleen; and daughter, Gabrielle Devereux.
Memorials may be directed to the food bank at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Walker.
