Tabor, Edmund F.
Edmund F. Tabor, 88, of Independence, died Monday, April 11, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence, Iowa.
Ed was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Harold J. and Mabel (Houck) Tabor. He was a 1940 graduate of Independence High School and a 1942 graduate of Independence Junior College. On July 20, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant until his discharge in 1948. Following his discharge he enrolled at the University of Iowa, receiving his BS degree in commerce in 1948. On August 20, 1955 he was united in marriage to Geraldine E. Welsh, and the couple made their home in Independence where Ed became employed with the Independence Federal Bank for Savings, serving as president for 20 years before his retirement in 1987.
He was a member of the Independence Lions Club, the Independence Rotary Club, and served on the board of the Wapsipinicon Golf Club, the Independence Public Library, and Iowa Ham.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; a son, Byron (Julie) Tabor, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Paula Gerstenkorn, Waterloo, Iowa; and a grandson, Dale Gerstenkorn, Jr., Waterloo, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Elizabeth Plank; and a brother, Charles Tabor.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, with Rev. Sue Ann Raymond officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, where a military memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., and from 8 a.m. until services Thursday at the funeral home.
