She was employed as a quality control inspector at Motorola Inc. for 14 years. After moving to Cedar Rapids, she was employed at Peoples Bank and attended night classes at Kirkwood. She was later employed in the accounting department of Larken Inc. and Hawkeye International until her retirement.
Sylvia enjoyed bowling, crocheting, baking, growing her own black raspberries and spending time with family and friends. She loved dogs, especially the ones that knew her as Grandma.
She was a regular attendee of Hillside Wesleyan Church, where she was a longtime volunteer in the food pantry and a member of the Shepherds group.
Sylvia is survived by two daughters, Cindy (Jim) Eckhart of Palo, Iowa, and Julie (Patrick) Scheetz of North Liberty, Iowa; and a son, Mark (Kim) Wellman of Peoria, IL; two grandsons, Tim and Tyler Wellman; a sister, Sharon (Dennis) Morrall of Quincy, Ill.; two step-granddaughters; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Charles Schafer; and a sister, Marlene Ray.
A visitation will be offered at the Hillside Wesleyan Church on Saturday, April 24, from noon until service time at 1 p.m. with the Pastor Kirk Statler presiding. A luncheon will follow immediately after the service. A private inurnment will be held at the Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery-Garden of Serenity.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions maybe made in her name to the Hillside Wesleyan food pantry or the Hall Perrine Cancer Center.
The family would like to thank Dr. Deborah Wilbur and the entire staff at Mercy Hospice for all the care and support they have shown to Sylvia while she was in their care.
