Sylva was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Eldora, Iowa, the daughter of James and Gladys (Madole) Steckler. She attended the University of Iowa, where she met her future husband, Thomas R. Dwyer. They were united in marriage on Dec. 28, 1956, and raised five children. He preceded her in death in 1975.
She was a lab technician for Cross Labs and Mercy Iowa City for many years. She was united in marriage to Edwin Anderson on Sept. 10, 1988. He preceded her in death in 2003.
Sylva sang for many years in the Iowa City St. Mary's choir and Choralaires, and with the Resurrection Church in Rochester, Minn. She adored movies, classical music and musicals, taking photos and sharing them, traveling and hiking around Pine Lake. In later years, she remained active by walking and gardening. She was a huge fan of the Hawkeyes and delighted in cheering them on. Her greatest happiness came from spending time with her family and in being a mom and grandma.
Sylva is survived by four children, Michael (Denise) Dwyer of San Diego, Calif., Kim Choate of Kyles Ford, Tenn., Jeff (Chris) Dwyer of Iowa City and Jane Hunter of Plainfield, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Jack Dwyer, Tyler Choate, Carrie Wilson, Kaci Maire, Sophie Dwyer, Emily Hunter and Jessica Hunter; four great-grandchildren, Tate Wilson, Maddelin Maire, Elliot Maire and Theodore Choate; and her special furry friend, Buddy.
She was preceded in death by her son, Daniel C. Dwyer, on Oct. 30, 2012.
