Swore, Betty J.
Betty J. Swore, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, in her home, surrounded by her family, following a courageous battle with cancer. A celebration of her life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at Unity Center, 3791 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE, Cedar Rapids, with the Rev. Brenda Ehret officiating. The family will greet friends one hour before the celebration.
Papich-Kuba Funeral Service is serving the family.
Betty is survived by her sister, Dorie Hach of Cedar Rapids; her children, Jerry (Beverly) Swore of Boone, Cindy (Ken) Ystesund of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sandy McCright of Cedar Rapids; daughter-in-law, Jeanne Swore of Cedar Rapids; and her bonus children, Leroy (Judy) Swore, Darlene Swore, Charles (Carol) Swore, all of Cedar Rapids; and daughter-in-law, Sharon Gladwin. Many, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Dorothy and Esther; an infant brother, Glen; husband, George; son, Rick; son-in-law, David McCright; and bonus son, Chriss Gladwin.
Betty was born Nov. 10, 1930, in Chelsea, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Edward and Emma Hach. She graduated from McKinley High School, Cedar Rapids, in 1947. Betty married George A. Swore on June 8, 1948.
Betty was an excellent cook, happiest while in her kitchen cooking, baking, canning and making her much sought after strawberry jam. She was an avid reader and looked forward to springtime and mushroom hunting. Most of all she enjoyed her family and being with them.
Betty, or “Bubbie,” as she was known to most, had a delightful laugh and sense of humor, which she kept until the very end. She enjoyed watching basketball and football and placing Monopoly money bets on the games with her son, Jerry (she was usually ahead).
Betty had a special bond with her sister, Dorie, and the two of them had fun where ever they were.
For the past three years, she fought an intense battle with her disease so that she could remain with her family. She will be missed and will leave a void in the lives of those who were fortunate to have known and loved her. She was a blessing. She was a wonderful mom, a true friend and confidant to her children. She will forever be loved and always be appreciated for her strengths, her guidance and her unconditional love for each of them.
Betty's family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Mercy, especially Darci, for her many months of care and support; and to Kay, for her recent months of care and support. All of those associated with hospice were wonderful, however, these two ladies were exceptional.
