Swartzendruber, Iona L.
A Celebration of Life for Iona L. Swartzendruber, 90, of Kalona, who died Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at the Pleasantview Home after a yearlong decline in health, will be held 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, at the Kalona Mennonite Church, with Pastors Scott Swartzendruber and Mick Murray officiating. Burial will follow in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona.
Iona Lucille Brenneman Swartzendruber was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Erlis and Martha (Marner) Brenneman. She was united in marriage to Roy Swartzendruber on March 11, 1944. Iona was a member of the Kalona Mennonite Church, WMSC, and the Red Hat Ladies. She enjoyed quilting, visiting, bookkeeping, traveling, flowers and gardening.
Survivors include six children, Dale (Pud) Swartzendruber of Wayland, Arliss (Carol) Swartzendruber of Lakewood, Colo., Margaret (Roy) Beikman of Gilbert, Ariz., Kenneth (Audrey) Swartzendruber of Traverse City, Mich., Duane (Sheri) Swartzendruber of Iowa City and Mary (David) Althaus of St. Louis, Mo.; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Merle Brenneman of Jamesville, Wis., Dayle Brenneman of Upland, Calif., Lucine Morrison of West Branch, Leta Mae Schneider of Kalona and Arlene Snyder of Kalona.
Preceding Iona in death were her parents; her husband, Roy in 1986; one daughter, Lucille Brenneman; a daughter-in-law, Shirley Swartzendruber; two brothers, Marlin and Glenn Brenneman; two sisters, Ollie Hershberger and Wilma Yoder; and a special friend, Milo Stransky.
A memorial fund has been established for the Pleasantview Home Memorial Garden.
