Swanson, Donald C.
Donald C. Swanson, 69, of Coggon, passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness. Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Zion Presbyterian Church, Coggon, by Sarah Gengler. The family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion. Burial: Coggon Cemetery, Coggon. Military honors provided by Coggon American Legion Post #362.
Don was born March 29, 1943, in Coggon, the son of Carl and Nadine (Hill) Swanson. Don graduated from Coggon High School in 1961. He served in the United States Army and was employed by Evergreen Packaging (Cherry Burrell) from where he retired after 32 years. He was a 45 year member of Coggon American Legion Post #362, serving as treasurer for most of those years. He was a member of the Mecca Lodge in Coggon, and served as the Jackson Township Clerk.
Don always enjoyed refinishing furniture, working outdoors, spending time with his family and most of all, a clean vehicle.
He is survived by his wife, Marvel; his children, Donna (Butch) Reid of Coggon, Mary Bullock of Omaha, Neb. and Steve Swanson of Coggon; granddaughter, Madison Reid of Coggon; sister, Marilyn (Jack) Burnell of Springville; special aunt, Shirley (Chuck) Hollan of Cedar Rapids; mother-in-law, Edith McCright; sister-in-law, Sona (Ray) Christiansen; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and father-in-law.
The family requests no flowers; a memorial fund has been established in Don's memory.
Don's family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke's Hospice and 5th Floor East for the care that was given to Don.
