Suzanne Jane Melton, 82, of Marion, formerly of Springville, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018, at Winslow House Care Center, Marion. Funeral service: 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, with military honors. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial: Springville Cemetery, Springville, at a later date.
Suzanne was born May 21, 1935, in Rock Island, Ill., the daughter of Edwin Henry Hartman and Agnes Ethel (Krohn) Hartman. She served in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Hospital in San Diego during the Korean War. Suzanne married Donnel Ray Melton on Jan. 15, 1955. To this union, one daughter was born. Their marriage later was dissolved. She was honorably discharged from the Navy on April 28, 1955. Suzanne attended and graduated from St. Luke's School of Practical Nursing on Sept. 24, 1959. She worked as an LPN for St. Luke's Hospital for a short time in pediatrics, and then worked for 37 years at Visiting Nurses Association of Linn County as an LPN.
Suzanne was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved cats and dogs, and owned several special four-legged friends throughout the years. Suzanne enjoyed watching birds, and loved raising African violets. She went on several service projects to Kentucky throughout the years. At Winslow House, she became a bingo queen, and made many friends.
Suzanne is survived by her daughter, Mary (Phil) Tucker of Marion; grandchildren, Susan (Kay) Tucker of St. Louis, Mo., Matthew (Kimberley Merta) Tucker of Shellsburg and Melissa (Luke) Wroblewski of Oskaloosa; great-grandchildren, Teagan, Anthony and Liam Wroblewski of Oskaloosa; cousin, Donna (Bob) Huffman of Diamond Bar, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Donald Edwin Hartman; two nieces; two great-nephews; and her faithful friend, Annie, her collie.
The family would like to thank the kind care Suzanne received from Norse Transport and the staff at both the ER at Mercy Medical Center ICU and Hospice of Mercy. A very special thanks goes to everyone at Winslow House Care Center in Marion. The loving care and support our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother received was something we will never forget. You are all very special people, and will be a part of our family forever.
A memorial fund has been established in Suzanne's memory.
