Sutton, Richard 'Dick'
Richard “Dick” Sutton, 96, of Strawberry Point, formerly of Manchester/Delhi, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2012, at his home in the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. He was born on a farm near Delaware, the son of Charles and Charlotte (Rich) Sutton on March 30, 1916. He was raised in the Delhi area, and attended Delaware School. He was a 1933 graduate of Delhi High School.
Dick was united in marriage to Winona Keith on June 10, 1942. Together they farmed near Delhi. Winona passed away from cancer in 1980.
In 1983, Dick married Betty (Keith) Glew. His passion was farming and loved his pigs and cattle. They moved to the Gernand Retirement Village in 2002. They enjoyed spending the winters in Edinburg, Texas, for 20 years.
Dick had been a member of First Lutheran Church in Manchester for the past 29 years. Prior to that, he was a member of the Methodist Church in Delhi. Dick enjoyed playing sports as well as watching the Cubs, if they were winning. He also enjoyed following the markets, square dancing and playing cards. Dick received an Award from Governor Branstad for 40 years of taking the residents of the Delaware County Home out for pizza. He also was a supporter of Dollars for Scholars at Maquoketa Valley High School.
Survivors include his wife, Betty of Strawberry Point; stepchildren, Vicki (John) Zietlow of Manchester, Dennis (Melanie) Glew of Bettendorf, and Danny (Cathy) Glew of Manchester; eight stepgrandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; two nephews, Verle (Donna) Hankins of Manchester and Joe Keith of Delhi; and one niece, Marlys (Jim) Rees of Delhi.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Winona; a twin infant brother; one sister, Leola (Sutton) Hankins; and one brother-in-law, Leonard Hankins.
Celebration of Life Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at First Lutheran Church in Manchester with Dennis Glew officiating. The family will greet friends an hour before the service Saturday, Aug. 18 at the church. At the request of Dick, his body was donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be given to Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point.
