Susie M. Cain, 93, of West Des Moines, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Anamosa, died on May 15, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines.
Susie was born on July 23, 1924, in rural Appanoose County, Iowa, to Jerry and Zeola (Coe) Albertson. She graduated from Bloomfield High School and then from Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines, becoming a licensed beauty operator. Susie also was a local telephone operator and worked in several factories. From 1969 to late 1974, Susie was the study hall supervisor at Anamosa Junior High School. Susie then worked at Mercy Hospital in both dietary and the kitchen until her retirement in 1991.
Surviving are her children, Tom Cain of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Greg Cain (Dawn Raye) of Elkton, Md., Sara Johnson of Weaver, Ala., Patricia (Richard) Galloway of Elk Park, N.C., Jim (Laura Amsler) Cain of Des Moines and Terry Cain of Iowa City; 10 grandchildren, Sheehan (Jenna) McCoy of San Francisco, Calif., Thom (Rachel) Cain of Arcadia, Fla., Liam Cain of Laramie, Wyo., Brenna (Eric Johnson) Cain of Loveland, Colo., Ned Cain of Arcadia, Fla., Tim (Amber) Cain of Fuquay Varina, N.C., Genny (John) Wilt of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., Heather (Dusty) McKleroy of Oxford, Ala., Abbie Cain of Lombard, Ill., and Olivia Cain of Des Moines; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Alma, Daisy and Ruby; her son, Gerald Edward Cain; and her son-in-law, John Johnson.
A private memorial service will be held to honor and celebrate Susie's life. Donations in memory of Susie may be directed to Family Promise of Greater Des Moines at 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines, IA 50310.
