Susan McConnell, 79, of Solon, passed away unexpectedly on April 26, 2025.
Sue was born on July 24, 1945 in Iowa City to Donald and Lourena (Barkhurst) Beaver. After graduating from West Liberty High School, Sue attended Mercy School of Nursing in Iowa City. She also worked at Sheller Globe where she met Jerry McConnell. The couple were married on December 31, 1965 in West Liberty. After their first son was born, Sue finished her nursing degree at St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Davenport. She worked in the emergency room at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for many years as a registered nurse before working as a court administrator for Johnson County.
In her free time, Sue was passionate about volunteering for hospice. She created numerous handcrafted quilts, knitted countless blankets for the people she cared for at hospice. She also loved gardening, chatting at her whipper will meetings, learning Tai Chi martial arts and mowing her yard. Sue was a social butterfly that enjoyed many activities with her many friends. Above all, Sue enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother.
Sue is survived by her children: Marc McConnell (Laura) and Don McConnell (Debi); siblings: Steve Beaver, Jody Beaver, Jan Vedepo, Alan Beaver and Andy Beaver as well as grandchildren: Thane, Kelsey, Nathan, Aidan, Riley, Kallie and Riley and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry and beloved sister-in-law, Jo (Bob) Sanders.
A celebration of life will be held later this spring or summer at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
