SUSAN ELIZABETH MAYES
Cedar Rapids
(1942 – 2017)
Susan, of Prospect, Ky.,
was born in Centralia, Ill.,
on April 21, 1942, the only
child of Adelbert L. Spiller,
M.D., and Ann Elizabeth
(Scharp) Spiller. She passed
away peacefully on
May 4, 2017, at the age of 75
after a hard-fought
courageous battle with
Parkinson's disease, with her loving husband at her side.
She is survived by her
husband of 53 years, Richard
(Rick); her son, Robert (Bob), and daughter-in-law, Paula, of San Francisco; and in
Seattle, her daughter, Elizabeth (Beth), son-in-law, Christopher (Chris), and granddaughter, Willow.
Susan's life was devoted to her family, the Episcopal Church, volunteering, reading, traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.
Susan, always a top student, graduated first in her
class in 1960 from Centralia Township High School,
where she made lifelong friends. She then was a
member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and the Class of 1964 at Northwestern University, graduating in December
1963, a day before marrying her lifelong partner, Rick.
While raising a handsome, precocious son, and
joyous, beautiful daughter, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where they lived from 1973 until 1992, Susan served the public schools, leading elementary school curriculum
enrichment programs. There she was very active in the American Association of University Women, League of Women Voters and St. Michael's Episcopal Church.
Since moving to the Louisville area in 1992, Susan
had been most active in St. Matthew's Episcopal
Church. She was a graduate of its Education for Ministry, a chalice bearer, a member of Daughters of the King and the bell choir, and served for many years on the
Women's Board of the Episcopal Church Home. She was a member and past president of AAUW, a member of the Woman's Club of Louisville, PEO and several book
groups. She was employed part-time many years
overseeing the cookbook section and coordinating
author events at Hawley Cooke and its successor
bookstore.
Memorial services in Louisville and San Francisco
will be announced at a later date.
