Susan Mary Malecki, 69, of Coralville, died in her sleep on Sunday, January 14, 2024, at Brown Deer Place. Memorial will be held at a later date.
Susan was born on November 28, 1954, in Mt Clemens, MI, the daughter of George and Clara (Bolinsky) Malecki. She grew up in Charleston, SC. She graduated from James Island High School, College of Charleston (1978, BA), University of Georgia (1981, MA in Musicology), University of Iowa (Certificate in Sacred Music and PhD-ABD in Musicology).
Susan, an avid reader and scholar of early music, lost her ability to read as a result of a stroke in October 2020. This necessitated retirement from her position as Library Assistant III at University of Iowa Libraries. She had been employed in the Rita Benton Music Library for 17 years and in Interlibrary Loan services for 9 years. Those who worked with Susan will remember with respect her high level of intelligence, her laugh, and her wry sense of humor. She had a fierce love for felines, particularly those that came into her care.
Susan is survived by her brother Larry of Goose Creek, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents and the many cats who were her housemates.
Donations in Susan’s memory may be given to the “RSCM Scholarship Fund” at Trinity Episcopal Church to enable children to attend Royal School of Church Music Choral Residencies www.trinityic.org/giving; “UI Libraries Student Employee Scholarship Fund” www.lib.uiowa.edu/giving/; or the Johnson County Humane Society www.johnsoncountyhumaneiowa.org.
