SUSAN MARIE SEDLACEK
Iowa City
Susan Marie Sedlacek of Iowa City passed away on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019, at the age of 73, surrounded by her loved ones at Mercy Hospice after a courageous battle with cancer.
Susan, known as Susie to most, was born on March 22, 1945, to Alice and Earl Grizel. After Susie's mom passed away in 1956, she was raised by her grandparents, Robert and Emily Schump. She graduated from Iowa City High in 1965. On March 22, 1972, Susie had her first date with Richard (Dick) Sedlacek, it must have been love at first sight because they were married just over a year later on May 18, 1973. Susie loved to garden, take photos of her family, watch the Hawkeyes and work on her cookbook. You could always find her outside. She enjoyed mowing her yard, pulling weeds, raking the leaves or just sitting on her porch swing. She was a cat lover, any stray that came around instantly became part of the family. Susie was set in her ways, she was stubborn even up until the end. It's was that stubbornness everyone grew to love and will be remembered and missed by so many.
Susie was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents and a niece.
She leaves behind her husband, Dick; a daughter-like niece, Lindsey (Matt) Staebler; sister, Emy Lou (Joe) Weldon; and brother, Frank (Kris) Grizel; brothers-in-law, Jim Sedlacek, Mike (Arla) Sedlacek, Bill (Cherit) Sedlacek, Chuck (Margaret) Sedlacek, Dennis (Lisa) Sedlacek, Dan (Shari) Sedlacek and Donny (Dee) Sedlacek; and many other nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City with a luncheon immediately following in the fellowship hall of the church. Private graveside burial will take place at a later time.
In lieu of memory, donations may be made to the Iowa City Animal Shelter or Iowa City Hospice.
