Susan Lylene (Bateman) Powell, age 70, passed away December 4, 2024. She was born August 21, 1954, in Waterloo, IA to Lyle (d) and Marlene (d) Bateman. She is survived by her five sisters: Virginia, Angela, Betsy, Robyn, and Marlena, as well as one brother: Christian.
She grew up in Waterloo, Decorah, and Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1972. She married Brad Powell on October 15,1973. They had four sons: Jonathan (Jackie Young), William (Jen), Joseph, and Lyle (Emily) Powell. 16 Grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Susan graduated from Nebraska College of Business in 1988, with a degree in accounting. She worked as an accountant for Catholic Charities, Bethphage Mission, followed by 20 years at Jim Bender Trucking of Omaha. Susan loved her family, Iowa history, genealogy, and antiquing. She once explained that her passion for genealogy was fueled in part by her hope that the people she researched would not be forgotten.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.
Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home (1221 N. 16th St, Council Bluffs, IA) on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The family will direct memorials.
