Sue Ellen Cooling, 54, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery. A vigil service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where friends may visit with the family from 3 to 8 p.m., and on Monday after 9 a.m. Teahen Funeral Home is serving the family.
Sue is survived by her loving husband, Kevin; two sons, Nick (Cassie) of Des Moines and Chris (Becca) and grandson, Carter Cooling, of Grimes; daughter, Lauren of Cedar Rapids; parents, Walt and Mary Ellen Drew; five brothers, Clark (Sandy) Drew of Vinton, Kevin (Terri) Drew, Craig (Kris) and Kurt Drew, all of Cedar Rapids, and Kelly (Jill) Drew of Deland, Fla.; sister, Beth (Gus) Hartauer of Carmel, Ind.; in-laws, Lloyd and Lois Cooling of Ely; two sisters-in-law, Jackie (Mark) Brown of Cedar Rapids and Kim Cooling of Ely; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, James and Luella Drew, and John and Mildred Kilpatrick; and a niece, Jennifer Drew.
Sue was born March 16, 1962, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Walter and Mary Ellen Kilpatrick Drew. She graduated from LaSalle High School in 1980 and received an associate degree from Kirkwood Community College. Sue was a Realtor for more than 20 years and was affiliated with Iowa Realty.
She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where she served as an adoration coordinator and was actively involved with the capital campaign, raising funds for the parish.
Sue loved spending time with her family and friends. She had a huge heart and could fill any room with love and laughter. Sue also was very compassionate and always was looking to serve others, along with taking care of her family.
She enjoyed spending time in the garden, exercising, baking and decorating, especially for the holidays. Sue always looked forward to attending her kids' sporting activities and Iowa Hawkeye events and treasured the times she spent with her sister, Beth, and family at the lake house.
