Suckow, Bruce
Bruce Suckow, 52, of Maynard, died Thursday evening, Sept. 24, 2009, at his home. Funeral service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ian Wolfe officiating. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Maynard, and one hour before the service Tuesday at the church. Interment: Long Grove Cemetery.
Robert Bruce Suckow was born Oct. 17, 1956, in Long Beach, Calif., the son of Robert E. and LuDean (Postel) Suckow. He graduated from West Central High School in 1975. Bruce was united in marriage to Glenda Sue Poock on Nov. 1, 1980, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Westgate. He was involved with concrete construction his entire adult life, most recently with Suckow Construction in Oelwein. Bruce was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and was the mayor of Maynard for the past six years. He had previously been active in the Maynard Little League program and was president of the Northeast Iowa Little League Association. Bruce was the driving force in upgrading the Maynard City Park and ball diamonds and took great pride in their upkeep.
He enjoyed fishing and camping, was a NASCAR and Iowa Hawkeye football fan, and enjoyed discussing politics and history. Bruce especially liked to attend his family's sports and school activities.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Glenda Suckow of Maynard; two daughters, Laine Suckow, a junior at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and Rachel Suckow, a freshman at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls; parents, Bob and LuDean Suckow of Maynard; three brothers, Brian (Chris) Suckow of Oelwein, Doug (Karla) Suckow of Fredericksburg and Rick (Lori) Suckow of Oelwein; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Helmuth and Esther Suckow; and maternal grandparents, Homer and Afton Postel.
A memorial fund has been established for Heart of Iowa Hospice in West Union.
