Sturtz, Sadie LeRue
Sadie LaRue Sturtz, 96, died Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 at her rural Garrison residence following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 23, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, with Hospice Compassus chaplain Barbara Tieszen officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.
Sadie was born Jan. 4, 1914, at Shellsburg, to Otis Darwin and Nellie Malinda (Engeldow) Coy and graduated from the Shellsburg High School in 1931. On Oct. 5, 1932, she was united in marriage to Marvin Sturtz at Rock Island, Ill. Marvin preceded her in death on May 13, 1995. Upon her death on Monday, Sadie was still living at the rural home where she and Marvin farmed and raised their daughters.
She enjoyed growing and tending her flowers and sewing, gardening, cooking and raising chickens. But her greatest joy came from being “grandma” to her grandkids.
Sadie is survived by her daughters, Betty (Robert) Schadle of Van Horne, and Dorothy (Billy) Readnour of Garrison; her grandchildren, Steven and Rhonda Readnour, Jenni Readnour and Rob Zehnder, Jeff and Teresa Schadle, Greg and Kris Schadle and Scott and Amy Schadle; her great-grandchildren, Jocelyn and Janell Readnour and Neil and Madelyn Schadle; her sisters, Blanche Henkel, Genevieve Thither and Edith Williams; her brothers, George Coy and Otis “Junior” Coy; her special grandchildren, Zachariah, Aurora and Jimmy; her care givers, Rhonda Eddington and Rose Marie Kerkman; and her loyal companion, “Skipper.”
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Loueva Johnson, Lloyd Coy, Erma Noeller, William Coy and Alta Gee.
