Stuart Fred Wendler was born to Glenn and Mary Jane Seifert Wendler on Sept. 25, 1954. He lived his entire life in High Amana, with the exception of four years spent in Homestead, Iowa. He attended the Amana schools and graduated from Amana High School with the class of 1973. In 1972, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout, an accomplishment that he was very proud of. Following high school, he began working for the Iowa County Secondary Road Department, where he operated a road grader maintaining gravel roads. He retired from Iowa County in 2009, after 34 years of service.
He was united in marriage to Wendy Ackerman on June 21, 1975, in Amana, Iowa. They divorced in 1994, but remained friends. He was a member of the Amana Church Society and the Masonic Saint Clair Lodge No. 164 of Fairfax.
Stuart loved being outdoors in any weather and especially enjoyed deer hunting and fishing. He
enjoyed visiting with people, whether strangers or friends. Recently, he received the most joy out of spending time with his granddaughters.
He is survived by his daughter, Maggie (Percy) Fields of Iowa City; son, Jacob (Natalie) Wendler of Johnston; granddaughters, Isabella Wendler of Iowa City and Cora Wendler of Johnston; brother, Guy (Terri) Wendler of Cedar Rapids; sister, Susy Wendler of West Des Moines; nephews, Peter, Ted and Charlie Wendler and Will and Kurt Reihmann; and aunt and uncle, Janet and Carroll Zuber.
He was preceded in death by his parents;
grandparents; and his
beloved and faithful canine companion, Sadie.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at St. Luke's Hospital for the extraordinary care that was given to Stuart during these very difficult last weeks.
