Strumpel, Agnes
WEST LIBERTY - Agnes Strumpel, 98, of West Liberty, died Sept. 28, 2010, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty. Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 3, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty. Funeral services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Iowa City. Graveside services: 4 p.m. Monday, St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Latimer.
Agnes Maria Schumacher Strumpel was born Dec. 8, 1911, in Maxfield Township near Readlyn, Iowa to Henry and Anna (Herman) Schumacher. She was baptized at home on Dec. 25, 1911, by the Rev. Louis Yockey of Immanuel Lutheran Church near Klinger, Iowa and attended school there.
In 1922, the family moved to Readlyn, where she attended St. Paul Lutheran School and was confirmed April 5, 1925, by the Rev. H. Maas. Agnes was employed as a telephone operator at the Readlyn Telephone Co.
She married John C. Strumpel on Jan. 8, 1935, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Readlyn by the Rev. T. Frese. They lived in Knittle, Iowa, where she and John operated the Knittle Creamery Co. for 30 years. In 1966, they moved to Waverly, where Agnes worked in the Dietary Department at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital.
After retiring from the hospital, they moved to Latimer, Iowa. In 1988, after the death of her husband, Agnes returned to live in Waverly and moved to West Liberty in 1995.
She is survived by three children, Lois Radke of Aurelia, Iowa, Kareen Strumpel of Coralville and Thomas (Corinne) Strumpel of West Liberty; three grandchildren, Michael (Suzette) Radke of Aurelia, Aaron Strumpel of Woodland Park, Colo., and Emily (Nathan) Worden of Seattle, Wash.; five great-grandchildren, Scott, Schuyler and Bryce Radke of Aurelia and Dominic and Nadiya Worden of Seattle; and her aunt, Emily Schumacher of Readlyn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brother, Clarence Schumacher; sister, Esther Johnson; two infant grandsons; and son-in-law, Gerald Radke.
