Stookey, Genevieve Hazel
Genevieve Hazel Stookey, 96, of Newton, Iowa, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Careage Nursing Home in Newton. A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, 2010, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. Private inurnment: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Those left to honor her memory are her husband, Dr. Norman Stookey of Newton; children, Lawrence (Dianne) Stookey and Marcia (Bryan) Thayer; her grandchildren, Jenny (Thayer) Schumacher, Daniel Thayer, Peter Thayer, Bethany Stookey, Michael Thayer and Benjamin Stookey; and her 10 great-grandchildren.
Genevieve was born Sept. 17, 1913, in Cedar Rapids, to Carl Walter Jensen and Edith Ann (Hall) Jensen. She attended Cedar Rapids schools and graduated from Grant High School in 1931. Genevieve graduated from Coe College's Public Music course in 1934. She taught in Blakesburg two years and in Cedar Rapids 10 years. She married Norman Wilson Stookey on Dec. 24, 1945, in Cedar Rapids. They were married for 54 years.
