Stier, James P.
IOWA CITY - James P. Stier, 83, of Iowa City, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following an extended illness. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Karl Divine-Koch officiating. The family will greet friends after noon Monday at the church. Family graveside services will be held at Oakland Cemetery. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.
Jim was born Dec. 18, 1926, in Beloit, Wis., the son of Edward and Lillian (Merklein) Stier. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946. Jim received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 from Carthage College. On June 17, 1950, he married Janet Rohwer in Clinton, Iowa.
Jim had been employed as chief of corrective therapy at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for 35 years. He retired in 1985. After his retirement from the VA he enjoyed many years of golfing with friends at the High point Golf Course and Elks Country Club. In recent years he enjoyed his retirement working part time in the dairy department at the First Avenue Hy-Vee where he enjoyed seeing his friends and colleagues.
Jim was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and the Coralville American Legion. He served on the Housing Commission of Iowa City, two years as its chairman. Jim was a loyal Hawkeye, Green Bay Packers and Cubs fan. For over 51 years he ran the parking lot near Golfview Drive during Hawkeye games.
He was an avid writer of the Letters to the Editor column in the Iowa City Press-Citizen.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Jan; their three children, Jeff (Mary) Stier of Clive, Julie (Doug) Hamer of Tucson, Ariz., and Joseph Stier of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Ryan and Emma Stier of Clive and Toby, Sean and Chase Hamer of Tucson, Ariz.; and his Brittany spaniel, Frankie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald; and his spaniel, Buddy.
