Cedar Rapids
Steven Thomas Russell, 71, of Cedar Rapids, IA, passed away on June 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones after an incredibly brave fight against a rare and aggressive form of Parkinson’s disease.
Born on December 7, 1953, in Elkton, MD, Steven grew up in the nearby town of North East, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors; hiking, camping, fishing, and boating in the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. He graduated from North East High School, where he met the love of his life and future wife of 51 years, Pamela Sizemore.
Steven went on to earn a degree in sociology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. During college, he worked as a laborer on job sites overseen by his father, learning carpentry and building the practical skills that became a cornerstone of his life. At a friend’s suggestion, he later took a job at the shipyard in Port Deposit, MD, helping construct the massive “tubes” for what would become the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore. That formative experience led Steven into a long and successful career in the nuclear power industry, a path that took him and his family across several states before settling permanently in Iowa.
Later in life, seeking a new direction, Steven became the maintenance manager for Panera of Iowa. There, his talent for fixing things, paired with his calm, organized nature, served him well. He retired from Panera in 2019.
In Iowa, Steven continued to enjoy the outdoors. Hiking, canoeing, and camping were quiet pursuits that reflected his steady, even-keeled spirit. His love of hiking, travel, and cuisine culminated in adventures to the British Isles, Canada, Alaska, and Italy. He also developed a passion for Blues music, cooking, and gardening, especially growing and canning tomatoes. Whether outdoors, in the kitchen, or in front of his table saw, Steven brought care and thoughtfulness to everything he did.
Steven is survived by his devoted wife, Pam; his son, Adam (Nikole) Russell of Cedar Rapids; and his beloved grandchildren, Brennan, Carson, and Darby. He also leaves behind his sister, Susan (Ted) Mercer of Newark, DE; and his niece, Melanie (Richard) Barbezat, along with their three children, of West Chester, PA.
A celebration of Steven’s life will be held from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, at the Olympic Southside Theater, 1202 3rd St. SE, #200, Cedar Rapids, IA.
