Steven Robert Hjermstad, 70, of Snohomish, Wash., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, July 4, 2017, in a Seattle nursing home. Service and burial will be at a later date in National Memorial Cemetery, Phoenix.
Surviving are a sister, Ann Whitehill; nieces, Shelley Rice and Amy Moore, and their children, Ellie Moore, Lilah Moore, Bo Moore, Tatum Rice and Brady Rice.
Hed was preceded in death by his parents, Erling and Evelyn Hjermstad of Cedar Rapids.
Steve was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Sept. 1, 1946, to Erling and Evelyn Hjermstad. He graduated from Washington High School, Class of 1965, the the University of Iowa in 1973. During and after his three years in the Army, Steve earned numerous pilot ratings which began a lifelong passion for flying and the aviation industry. His active and creative mind led to a long career designing, programming and solving technical problems for companies in the areas of microprocessors, Loran and satellite navigation systems. His name appears on a number of patents.
Steve's quiet and sincere manner acquired many good friends with similar interests, and their bonds remained steadfast for a lifetime.
