Stephen W. Eckard
STEPHEN W. ECKARD
Portland, Ore.
Steve Eckard, 69, died peacefully at home in Portland, Ore., surrounded by family on March 11, 2019, after a long illness.
He was born in Baltimore, and grew up and lived in Cedar Rapids most of his life. He graduated from Washington High
School and spent four years in the U.S. Army, including a year in South Vietnam. He worked as a pressman and, most recently, a finish carpenter. In his spare time, he loved woodworking, camping, fishing in Minnesota and bowling. He had high standards for his work and personal projects, and could build or fix almost anything. Along with friends, he rebuilt his cabin on the Wapsipinicon River and enjoyed many happy times there.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Byrne Eckard, in 1986, and second wife, Elaine Meyer Eckard, in 2012; his older brother, Bob; and his parents, Bob and Harriet Eckard.
He is survived by his sister, Virginia Eckard Eichner (Mark); sister-in-law, Ellen Meyer (Rod); numerous cousins and nieces and nephews; as well as many friends in Cedar Rapids.
His good humor, love of animals and loyal friendship will be greatly missed.
A memorial gathering in Cedar Rapids is being planned for summer.
