Stephen was born on May 10, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Elvin and Vivian (Moore) Elam. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, class of 1965. Steve served in the United States Navy over 18 years, retiring on July 31, 1994. He worked as a CNC machinist at Rock Island Arsenal for several years. He was an avid golfer, fisherman, traveler, builder of model airplanes, and forever a mechanic. In his younger years, he loved racing cars and motorcycles. He loved casinos and Fremont Street. When he was able to get together with the VP47 squad he was sure to have a good time. As he reached his golden years, his favorite sound was the sound of his grandchildren cackling and rough housing.
