Stephen E. Switzer, 63, formerly of Iowa City and Des Moines, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2021, at his home in Red Feather Lakes, Colo., surrounded by much love.

Stephen Evert Switzer was born March 20, 1958, in Iowa City, the son of Evert and Ruth (Evink) Switzer. He attended schools in Iowa City, graduating from City High School with the Class of 1976, and later from the University of Iowa. He joined the Iowa City Police Department in 1982 and worked as an officer until accepting a position with the State of Iowa Attorney General's Office in 1989, when he moved to Des Moines. At the age of 57, he retired after 33 years in law enforcement and moved to his dream home in Colorado. He loved his mountain home and the community he lived. He was a member and president of the local volunteer fire department and a member of Poudre Wilderness Volunteers and Outdoor Colorado.

Those who have known Steve, knew an intelligent, voracious reader, always wanting to learn type of guy. He was always up for the challenge. He loved the outdoors ever since the family camping trips as a kid. In law enforcement, he was respected as one who listened and took action to solve the problem sooner than later.

Steve married Cindy Cook in 1987, and they later divorced, but had one son, James. He married Britta Anderson in 2011.

Steve is survived by his wife, Britta; son, James; step-son, Frank Adam Tinney and his wife, Jaquline and daughter, Alice; his sisters, Sydney Switzer, Suzanne Erenberger and her husband, Joel, Judith Randall and her husband, Jerry and Carolyn Switzer; and sister-in-law, Devora Peterson and her husband, Gary. His parents, Ruth and Evert passed before him.
