Stephen L. Sauer, 73, of Walker, died Friday morning, May 13, 2016, at Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.

Stephen was born Aug. 17, 1942, in Liberty Township near Coggon, Iowa, the son of Earnest G. and Vesta A. (Smith) Sauer. He was a 1961 graduate of Brandon High School in Brandon. On April 5, 1975, he married Karen K. Rommann at Hope Wesleyan Church, Independence. The couple lived south of Independence until moving to Walker in 1976. Stephen also was employed with Iowa Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids and as a mechanic with Rowley Equipment in Rowley.

Stephen enjoyed fishing, but his love was in farming and working on farm machinery.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Sauer, Walker; a daughter, Stephania Sauer, Maquoketa; a stepdaughter, Judy (Brian) Bries, Norway; four grandchidren, Colton Craig, Aydan Rickels, Kristopher and Brody Bries; three sisters, Frances Grabau, Central City, Judy Wood, Fairfax, and Linda Rodby, North English; and a brother, Raymond Sauer, Bondurant.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Vesta Sauer; a son, Christopher Sauer; and three brothers, Eldon, David and Rickey Sauer.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 19, at Walker United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mark Morehouse officiating. Burial will be in Circle Grove Cemetery, rural Walker. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence, and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
