Stephen (Grumpy) Johnson, 71, of Alburnett, Iowa passed away on February 12, 2025. Per Steve’s wishes, there will be no services held. A celebration of life will take place on April 12, 2025, from 3:00-8:00 P.M. at 180 North Troy Road in Robins, Iowa.
Steve was a man of many colors and a jack of all trades. He worked as a mechanic for 35 years at Dave’s Service. He was a “professional” fisherman and hunter. He has heavily influenced and mentored many. If you didn’t know him, you wouldn’t like him. He was known for being ornery and very stubborn in his ways, but he had a great sense of humor. If he picked on you, he liked you. Although an impatient man, he sure loved his dogs. His acts of kindness and his big heart have made an incredible impact on the people who knew him best. He had a strong will to help others but refrained from accepting help for himself.
His 8-year battle with cancer never stopped him from accomplishing his biggest goals. He refused to surrender to his illness and would not let cancer win, staying true to himself, family and friends who he loved dearly. In the end, his battle was lost but was nothing short of a good fight.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years Nancy; mother-in-law Marie Maxfield; stepsons Brandon and Darren (Shelly) Wilson; son Steven (Amanda) Johnson; grandchildren Myah, Jaymus, Zeplyn Wilson, Lexi (John) Snodgrass, Payton (Cicily), and Daven Wilson; 2 great-grandchildren Kyson and Laiklyn; brother Tony (Cynthia) Peterson; sisters Patty (Joe) Hernandez, Barbara Ingels, and Denise Parks; brother-in-law Mike Maxfield; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister Wavonna Bishop; father-in-law Charles Maxfield; sister-in-law Lois Maxfield; brother-in-law Bob Ingels; and nephews Jamey Maxfield and Mike Vestal.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Nancy Maxfield and family to P.O. Box #256 Alburnett, Iowa 52202.
