Steine, Michael G.
Michael G. Steine, 65, of Independence, died Thursday evening, Nov. 17, 2011, at the Buchanan County Health Center, Independence. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory, Independence. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 8 a.m. until services Tuesday at the funeral home, where a military memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Wilson Cemetery, Independence.
Mike was born Aug. 3, 1946, in Decorah, Iowa, the son of James and Loraine (Williams) Steine. He graduated from the Decorah High School in 1964 and entered the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the USS Vogelgesang during the Vietnam War until his discharge in 1968.
Mike was married to Diane Boyd and the couple later divorced. On Feb. 13, 1971, he was united in marriage to Kathleen K. McLeland. The couple resided in Independence, where Mike was employed with the Independence Light and Power Co. until he retired for health reasons. Mike also was a sign painter and artist in the Independence area for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy; four children, Brad Steine, Lowell, Ark., Genevieve (Tim) Manatt, Gilbertville, Tina Kite, Independence, and Michael Steine, Carbondale, Ill.; four grandchildren, Tim (Sushmita) Manatt, Falls Church, Va., Sarah Manatt, Mesa, Ariz., Brittney and Blake Higgins, Independence; a brother, Clair (Sylvia) Steine, Decorah; an aunt, Sue Steine, Winona, Minn.; and his best friend, Larry Wright, Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
