Steger, Donald A.
Donald, A. Steger, 80, of Dyersville died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 at Mercy Medical Center, Dyersville after a sudden illness.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday (today) at Kramer Funeral Home in Dyersville, where a parish scripture service will be held at 3 p.m. by Deacon Jerry Miller.
Military Honors will be accorded by American Legion Post 137 and VFW Post 7736 at 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday at the St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with burial in the church cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Gross.
Donald was born on Aug. 15, 1929 in Dyersville, the son of Sylvester and Rose Quint Steger. He married Darlene Engelkenon Jan. 16, 1954 in, St Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna.
Don served in the United States Army in Germany as a Military Police Officer. Upon returning to the U.S., he joined the VFW and the American Legion where he was a 50-year member.
Don graduated from Xavier High School in 1946. He worked for All Steel Welded Truck Company after graduation. In 1957 he started at John Deere in the Dubuque tool room. Don retired as the tool room supervisor in 1984. After retirement, Don drove trucks for various companies hauling everything from gas to over-sized loads to the west coast. He drove the bi-county ambulance for eight years, as well as the Tri State Travel bus.
He enjoyed the Dyersville Sportsman Club, where he was a life member, spending time with his children and grand-children, fishing, sitting on the sandbar, playing dice and card games and traveling.
Survivors include his, wife, Darlene, of Dyersville; one son Dean Steger and fiancée Suzanne Heber of Dyersville; one daughter, Darla Hogan and husband Sam of Farley; nine grandchildren: Spencer, Miranda and McKenna Hogan of Farley, Leah, Nate, and Erin Steger of Dyersville, Luke MacDonald of New Jersey, and Shannon and Tyler Black of Dubuque; one great grandchild due April 27, 2010; two sisters: Norma Apel (Francis) of Dubuque, and Rosemary Schmitz (Gene) of Raymond; one brother, Vern Steger (Celie) of Dyersville; brothers-in-law: Gerald Engelken of New Vienna, Dan Engelken (Threse) of Dyersville; and sister in-law Virg Link of Farley.
Memorials are preferred in Don's memory.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Sylvester and Rose Steger and brother Paul Steger.
