Stanley “Stan” A. Smith, 92, died peacefully Thursday, May 9, 2024.
A funeral service to celebrate Stanley’s life will be held Saturday, May 25, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, where family will greet friends prior to the service from 10:30 – 11:30 AM. Everyone is invited to stay for a luncheon following the service. Private burial will be held at the Lone Tree Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Friends of the Animal Shelter Foundation or Zion Lutheran Church.
Stan was born September 29, 1931, in Washington D.C., the son of Frank and Belle Smith. He was raised in the D.C. area and later in Lanham, MD. He served in both the US Naval Air and Naval Reserves training pilots. Stan then worked 26 years as a Xerox technician, initially running the Pentagon account in the D.C. area and later providing training for them in New York City. He continued his Xerox career when he moved to Iowa, living in both Lowden and Cedar Rapids. On March 17, 2002, Stan married Elnora Rodgers Swartzendruber and moved to Iowa City, IA.
Stan was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and volunteered for numerous organizations including the National Kidney Foundation, Milestones Cedar Rapids, and the Arthritis Foundation. He was a leader for the AF’s Aquatic Program at Mercer Pool in Iowa City and their “Volunteer of the Year” in 2001. Stan also taught adult driver refresher courses for AAA.
Music was an important part of Stan’s life. He enjoyed playing the piano, beginning at age 7, and did so semi-professionally for several years. He was also a member of the “Friends of Music Club” in Cedar Rapids. He had a good singing voice and enjoyed singing to his nurses and care takers.
Stan is survived by his wife, Elnora; his daughters, Patricia Smith, and Susan Schneweis; stepsons Roger and Lore Swartzendruber and their respective wives, Tammy, and Shanna, as well as his granddaughter, Katherine Schneweis and step-grandchildren, Cayman and Tybee Swartzendruber.
