STANLEY BARTON COOPER
Monticello
Stanley Barton Cooper, of Monticello, formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away suddenly on Oct. 23, 2018, at the age of 64.
Stan was born on March 9, 1954, to Norman and Rebecca Cooper in San Diego, Calif., where his father had been serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. After the war, his parents moved to
Des Moines, where Stan was raised. A graduate of Hoover High School, he attended the University of Northern Iowa and settled in Cedar Rapids, where he began his career as a carpenter.
A proud member of Carpenters Union Local 308, Stan was the apprenticeship coordinator for many years, teaching countless students the art of carpentry. He took great satisfaction in seeing his students become safe and skilled tradespeople.
An avid Cardinals fan, Stan enjoyed attending the team's spring training in recent years while spending winters in Gulf Shores, Ala. He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and family, hunting each fall, following Xavier High School softball and visiting with people wherever he went, always quick with a hearty laugh and story to tell.
Stan is survived by his daughters, Andrea, Renae (Bryan) Petersen and Jill; their mother, Jean (Kedley) Cooper; and his sister, Karen (Trace) McDermott, all of the Cedar Rapids area. He also is survived by extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman L. and Rebecca F. Cooper.
A celebration of Stan's life and a luncheon will be held at Five Rivers Carpenter JATC building in Cedar Rapids on Sunday, Nov. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Graveside services will be held in Puxico, Mo., at a later date. Teahen Funeral Home and Cremation Service is assisting the family.
Instead of flowers and/or gifts, memorial donations may be directed to Stan's daughters, who will distribute them to Indian Creek Nature Center and Animal Welfare Friends of Monticello.
