Peter Alois Stammeyer
“A Life Well Lived …
A Life Well Remembered.”
The grass may die, and flowers may fade, but the memory of Peter Alois Stammeyer lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Peter laid his soul into the arms of angels on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2010.
His journey of 73 years began July 27, 1936, in St. Lucas, Iowa. He was born the eighth child of 12 children to Peter F. and Magdelena (Klemmer) Stammeyer.
Peter became whole when he married his devoted wife, Cynthia (Winchell) on Nov. 29, 1958. To this union were born four children.
Surviving are Theresa (Robert) Caswell of Kinross, Iowa, Betty Usher of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Patrick (Brooke) Stammeyer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Peter was blessed with four grandchildren, Cody and Spencer Usher, and Grace and Caleb Stammeyer.
Peter and Cindy made their home in Cedar Rapids for many years before moving to Van Horne. He supported his community of Van Horne through the Lions Club, Van Horne Businessmen, Future Green and was a member of the Van Horne Coop Telephone Co. Board. Peter belonged to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Van Horne.
He is survived by many family members, including his wife, Cindy; children; grandchildren; seven siblings, Leander (Marian) Stammeyer of St. Lucas, Marie Schaufenbuel of St. Lucas, Francis (Lu) Stammeyer of Oelwein, Irene Riffle of Kahoka, Mo., Anita Herold of Fort Atkinson, Joseph (Carol) Stammeyer of Waukon and David (Jacquelyn) Stammeyer of Quincy, Ill; two sisters-in-law, Margarete Stammeyer of St. Lucas and Sharon Lafler of California; a former son-in-law, Brian Usher of Cedar Rapids; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Peter will be greeted at the gates of Heaven by his parents; four siblings; an infant son, Mark; mother and father-in-law, Glenn A. and Frances (Bendorf) Winchell; and three brothers-in-law.
Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Van Horne, by Father Jack McClure, C.PP.S. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church, with a rosary/vigil service beginning at 6 p.m. Burial: 3 p.m. p.m. St. Luke's Catholic Cemetery, St. Lucas. Arrangements by Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion.
