Stambaugh, Irma Margurite (Maier)

Irma Margurite (Maier) Stambaugh, 92, of Springville, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 1 p.m. Thursday at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Dr. Karen Downy-Beals and the Rev. Don Cope. The family will greet friends 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private Burial: Springville Cemetery.

Irma was born May 3, 1917, in Alburnett, first born to Mabel (Bachman) and Carl W. Maier. She graduated from Alburnett High School in 1935. Irma took private lessons in speech, voice, and piano for a number of years at Coe College, Cedar Rapids. She completed comptometer school in the Chicago area.

Irma was married to Dale Stambaugh of Springville, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cedar Rapids, on Oct. 22, 1950. She was an employee of JC Penny in Cedar Rapids for 23 years. She first worked as a comptometer operator, then office manager, and finally head of personnel. She was the only woman on the Cedar Rapids Distribution Education Advisory Committee, which employed students in vocational training. In March 1965, Mrs. Stambaugh was names Linn County “Career Woman of the Year” by the Business and Professional Women's Club. She was an active participant in church and community organizations for many years. For the Springville Presbyterian Church, she was Choir Director, secretary/treasurer for the Board of Trustees, a Trustee, and part of other church committees. Irma was President of the Springville Federated Women's Club. She was an accomplished pianist, vocalist, accompanist, and gave readings, and at one time, had many piano students.

Survivors include a brother, Lester (Virginia) Maier of Alburnett; sister, Eleanor (Richard) Taylor of Iowa City; and sister-in-law, Susan Kinkade of Sioux Falls, S.D. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Dale Stambaugh; sister, Neva (Maier) Mercer; brother-in-law Richard Mercer; and her parents, Mabel and Carl Maier.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Irma's memory.
