Spurgeon, Warren Dean
Warren Dean Spurgeon, 47, formerly of Anamosa, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2010, at the University of Chicago Medical Center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 7, at the Antioch Christian Church in Marion. The Rev. John Seitz will officiate at the service. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Goettsch Funeral Home in Anamosa. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Iowa City.
Surviving are his wife, Deanna; son, Jared; father, Phillip of Iowa City; a sister, Regina (David) Alatalo of Iowa City; two brothers, Tim Spurgeon of Johnston and Jeff Spurgeon of Lisbon; one niece and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bernadette.
Warren Dean Spurgeon was born June 4, 1963, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was the son of Phillip and Bernadette (Hanzelka) Spurgeon. Warren was a 1982 graduate of Regina High School in Iowa City. Following high school Warren attended the University of Iowa, where he received his B.A. degree in Parks and Community Recreation and his master's degree in Leisure Studies. On Oct. 5, 1990, Warren and Deanna Distelhorst were united in marriage at First United Methodist Church in Marion.
Warren was director of the Parks and Recreation Department for more than 23 years, most recently in Sandwich, Ill. Warren truly loved his career. He enjoyed woodworking, bike riding, spending time with his Beagles, Bonnie and Clyde, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Warren was a loving son, husband, father, brother and friend and will be missed dearly by those closest to him.
