Spencer R. "Bob" Nelson, 90, of Tama, passed away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at the Winslow House Care Center in Marion under the care of Hospice of Mercy. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a graveside service to follow at 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo.
Spencer was born Aug. 8, 1926, in Tama, Iowa, the son of Spencer Carl and Jenifor (Lichty) Nelson. He graduated from Tama High School in 1945. Spencer served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, being honorably discharged on July 11, 1953.
On June 23, 1951, he was united in marriage to Darlene Crawford in Ankeny. Bob was employed at the Tama Paper Mill for 45 years. He was a member of Living Faith United Methodist Church in Tama, Tama American Legion and VFW. Bob served as president of the Local Brotherhood of International Paper Workers. He was treasurer for the Tama Fire Department for 25 years and ran the high school scoreboard for football for 40 years. Bob also served on the Tama/Toledo swimming pool board.
Survivors include one daughter, Jenifor (Bob) Menzer of Andover, Minn.; one son, Bob (Tina) Nelson of Marion; two grandchildren, Josh (Megan) Nelson and Kirsten Nelson; and four great-grandchildren, Holden Swyers and Brody, Paige and Owen Nelson.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Darlene, on April 26, 2010; his daughter, Pamela Morgan; two brothers, Richard and John Nelson; and one sister, Marjorie Nelson Hoffman.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Tama Fire Department.
