Spaight, James L.
James L. Spaight, 64, of Marion, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a sudden illness. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church by the Rev. John Gossman. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids, where a vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church immediately preceding the funeral mass.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Bonnie; his daughters, Emily Spaight of Phoenix, Ariz., and Abbie Spaight of Crystal Lake, Ill.; his sisters, Joyce Ann Spaight of Cedar Rapids and Mary (Patrick) Fitzgerald of Allen, Texas; his mother-in-law, Monica Hosch of Cascade; and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his father-in-law, Nick Hosch.
Jim was born Aug. 14, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of James and Eileen (Joyce) Spaight. He married Veronica “Bonnie” Hosch on May 1, 1976, in Cascade. Jim attended Loras College and graduated from Mount Mercy College with a bachelor's degree. He worked for many years at Cedarapids Inc. and most recently at World Class Industries in Hiawatha.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where he was a Eucharistic minister and took the Eucharist to the homebound. He was also a member of Fawn Creek Country Club in Anamosa and a VIP member of Granite City Restaurant in Cedar Rapids. He loved to play golf, travel, play Euchre and was a loyal Hawkeye fan.
Jim was an amazing man who made friends wherever he went. He was very devoted to his family and took great pride in his daughters and their accomplishments. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. Jim had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling a joke.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
