Sostenes "Chago" A. Santiago, 73, of Marion, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2018, at home surrounded by his beloved family and friends. A rosary service
will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, followed by a parish vigil service at 4 p.m. The family will greet friends following the vigil service until 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marion. The family will also greet friends one hour before Mass on Saturday at the church. Cremation will take place after the Mass and a private committal will be held at a later date.
Chago was born Oct. 25, 1944, in Van Horn, Texas, to Antonio and Guadalupe (Briseno) Santiago. He entered the Air Force in 1966 and proudly served his country until 1970. Chago married the love of his life, Sofia Castillo-De Anda, on July 28, 1973. He led a dedicated life in the steel industry and worked for Border Steel, Seattle Steel, PMX Industries and retired from John Deere (fixing "pinche problems"). Chago loved Notre Dame, his family and grandsons dearly. His huge heart knew no bounds and he had a contagious, loving smile. To meet Chago once was to have a friend for life.
Chago is survived by his wife, Sofia; daughters, Claudia (Frank) Vrtis and Karina (Robert) Sweetingham; grandsons, Eddie, Danny and Jimmy Vrtis; siblings, Antonio Santiago, Esequiel Santiago and Maria Santiago; and his compadre, Oscar Gonzales.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Roberto Santiago, Raul Santiago and Guadalupe Santiago.
