Sorci, Michael A.
Michael A. Sorci, 101, of Cedar Rapids, died Aug. 13, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. Graveside services will be 2 p.m. today at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Garden of Eternal Love section. In the event of rain, the service will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today.
Survivors include his grandchildren, Michael Sorci and wife Julie of Johnston, Delores Hartley and husband Tony of Cedar Rapids, and Diane Burrows of Cedar Rapids; great-grandchildren, Rachel and Travis Sorci, Michelle Samora, Doug Hartley, and Angela Burrows; and great-great-grandchildren, Dante and Alexander Samora, and Dylan and Andrew Burrows. He is also survived by nieces, Jackie Simmons and husband Wes, Lynn Mayer of Tucson, Ariz., Joyce Basil and husband Ron of Chicago, and Dr. Diana Scully of Richmond, Va.; daughter-in-law, Betty Luedeman; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Luzella; son, Richard; brothers, Ben and Frank Sorci; sisters, Mary Phister and Sally Harbinson; and niece, Denise Sorci.
Michael Angelo Sorci was born March 25, 1908, in Chicago, the son of Giacinto and Anna (Rizzo) Sorci. He married Luzella Greenlee on Dec. 2, 1928, in Chicago. She preceded him in death in 1997. He was employed as a sales manager at Smulekoff's from 1947 to 1984. Before to moving to Cedar Rapids, he was a deputy sheriff for Cook County in Chicago. He was also involved with politics during his time in Chicago.
