Sophie Weber, 86, of Mechanicsville, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at Mercy's Hiawatha Medical Park.
Sophie was born Aug. 30, 1934, in Hawarden, Iowa, to John and Seitike
"Sadie" (Keizer) Groen. She graduated
from Hawarden High School. On Aug. 19, 1955, she was united in marriage to Merlin Weber in Hawarden. She worked primarily as a homemaker raising her six children. After her children graduated from high school, she went back to work as a telephone operator at Teleconnect, from where she later retired.
Sophie was a member of Mechanicsville United Methodist Church and Mechanicsville Ladies Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking and was well known for her homemade doughnuts, kolaches and bread. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading and completing word searches. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends.
Those left to cherish her memories are her children, Peggy Beck of Cedar Rapids, Rick (Tonya) Weber of Marion and Shelly Albaugh of Waverly, 16 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Sophie, in infancy; a brother, Karl Groen; husband; two daughters, Kathy Weber and Kristie Crandall; a son, David Weber; two sons-in-law, Keith Beck and Jay Albaugh; and a great-grandson, Wyatt Farrington.
Due to COVID-19 and for the health and safety of everyone, a private family service will be held at Dawson Funeral Services in Olin. Burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Mechanicsville. Her service will be recorded and uploaded shortly after her service for the family to share.
