Sondag, Dennis J.
Dennis J. Sondag, 73, of Hiawatha, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009, peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family, following a short illness. Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at Zion Lutheran Church, 201 First Ave., Hiawatha, by the Rev. Daniel Krueger, with military honors. The family will greet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Graveside service: 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oakland Cemetery, Solon. Military honors provided by Marion American Legion Post 298.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Donna; a son, Rick Sondag of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Cathy (Rick) Andrews of Blairstown; two grandchildren, Tony and Lexi; a stepgrandson, Ryan; a brother, Steve (Jeanne) Sondag of Conroe, Texas; a brother-in-law, Guy (Marlene) Scalf of Frisco, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Arlene Campbell; and a sister-in-law, Vesta Taylor.
Denny was born May 3, 1936, the son of Gerald and Evelyn (Griggs) Sondag, in rural Wellman, Iowa. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids in 1954 and then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. Denny married Donna J. Scalf on Feb. 7, 1959, in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Rockwell Collins for 33 years, retiring in 1991. After retiring, he worked part-time as a shuttle driver for Pat and Mike McGrath, and greatly enjoyed woodworking. Denny was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hiawatha and a former member of IBEW Local 405 of Cedar Rapids.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Denny's memory.
