Smock, VaLee 'Val' C.
VaLee “Val” C. Smock, 71, of Longwood, Fla., formerly of Greeley, passed away Nov. 7, 2009, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Celebration of Life: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at Greeley United Methodist Church.
Val was born in Edgewood, Iowa on Feb. 14, 1938. He graduated from Greeley High School in 1955 and joined the United States Army as a paratrooper until 1958. Once out of the Army, he worked for Mert Miller Construction, then worked for Glendenning Motorways in Minneapolis. He moved to Florida in 1963.
Val loved to play golf which he continued to do even while receiving chemotherapy treatments. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors working in his yard and doing home repair projects. Val was always quick with a joke and always had a good story to tell.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Smock; son, Kevin (Brook) Smock of Atkins; daughter, Kathy (Andrew) Christensen of Cedar Rapids; and three stepdaughters, Lynette (Rodney) Romano, Connie (Brian) McNamara and Kimberly (James) Ayers, all of West Palm Beach, Fla. Val was also a very proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by five sisters, Lois (Burt) Kruger, Jayne Miller, Eva (George) Brecht, Audrey (Ambrose) Loecke and Joyce (Gary) Barnhart.
Val was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Edna Smock; two brothers, Ronald “Bud” Smock and Richard “Rick” Smock; and a brother-in-law, Merten Miller.
