Smith, Verval V.
Verval V. Smith, 80, of Atkins, died Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at Rockridge Residential Care Center in Shellsburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins, with the Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating. The family will receive friends one hour before service time at the church. Interment will be at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church Cemetery near Atkins. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.
A memorial fund has been established.
Verval was born Dec. 24, 1929, to Roy and Ella (Hartwig) Koehler, in Strawberry Point. She graduated from high school in Early, Iowa in 1947. She was united in marriage to Donald “D.W.” Smith on June 19, 1948, in Odebolt, Iowa. Verval worked as a clerk in the Sac and Benton county courthouses. She later worked as secretary and bookkeeper for Westside Grain & Salvage.
In her leisure she enjoyed camping, cooking and reading cookbooks. Verval was under the spiritual care of St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Atkins.
She is survived by her husband, D.W. Smith of Atkins; her daughters, Stacy Smith of Shellsburg and Becky Lynch of Sac City; her grandchildren, Amy (Brad) Blum and Chad Lynch, both of Sac City; and her great-grandchildren, Shae and Olivia Blum and Jordan and Morgan Lynch.
In addition to her parents, Verval was preceded in death by her stepfather, Alvin Henrich; and her brother, Gary Koehler.
