Smith Sr., Leo Michael
Leo Michael Smith Sr. passed away Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at home at the age of 75 years.
Leo was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Johnson County, Iowa, the son of Lewis and Marie (Stockman) Smith. He graduated from Tiffin High School in 1955. In 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served overseas for two years. He also served as an Army Reserve for four years, being discharged in 1961. Leo was united in marriage to Anna Marie Hahn on Nov. 26, 1960. To this union they were blessed with five children: Michael, Carolyn, Lawrence, Leo Jr. and Debra. They later divorced. Leo farmed in the Holbrook area for 45 years. In addition to farming he was an ag mechanic and a truck driver. In later years he delivered auto parts in Iowa City, retiring in 2011.
He enjoyed puzzles, bowling, playing cards, hunting, fishing, going on vacation with family and attending all of his children and grandchildren's activities. Leo was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Farm Bureau.
He is survived by five children, Michael (Julie) Smith of North English, Carolyn Crew of Williamsburg, Lawrence “Larry” (Tammy) Smith of Conroy, Leo Jr. (Sherri) Smith of Williamsburg and Debra (Mike) Rogers of Laquey, Mo.; 18 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Hubert (Shirley) Smith of Coventry, R.I., and Dean (Sylvia) Smith of Oxford; and two sisters, Arlene (Art) Miller and Ruby (Carson) Potter, both of Oxford.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harry Smith; and a sister, Barbara Smith.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Father Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. A prayer service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are for Williamsburg High School Athletic Department or Iowa County 4-H Scholarship Fund.
