Smith, Michael L.
Michael L. Smith, 69, of rural Ely, died Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, following a short illness in his home, surrounded by those he laughed with and loved. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ludmila Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by the Rev. Dennis Juhl. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may visit with the family on Monday at Teahen Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids from 5 to 8 p.m. Friends may also visit after 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
Survivors include three children, Scott Smith, Debbie Philipp and Jodi Siamis, and their spouses; and grandchildren, Ryan and Dalton Smith and Sierra, John and Max Philipp.
Michael was preceded in death by his son, Bryan; parents, Leonard and Helen Smith; and a brother, Dr. Patrick Smith.
Michael Leonard was born Nov. 15, 1943, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Leonard William and Helen Jean Hartz Smith. He attended Loras College in Dubuque, where he met the love of his life for 48 years, Shirley Ann Feldman. They were married on April 3, 1965, in Dubuque.
Michael was a salesman for Linn Candy Co. for many years and retired from Midland Forge. He also enjoyed life on the farm, where he was an owner/trainer/breeder of Standardbred race horses. He was a member of Iowa Harness Horseman Association and the United States Trotting Association.
His trademark sense of humor was an attribute until his passing. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.
